Yoga means Yog which is to unite, Body, Mind and Spirit

  1. YAMA – Ethical conduct towards others
  2. NIYAMA – Ethical conduct towards Self
  3. ASANA – Yoga Postures to control the body
  4. PRANAYAMA – Breathing exercises to control mind and Pran (Life forces)
  5. PRATYAHARA – withdrawing attention from body and senses.
  6. DHARANA – Concentration of the mind
  7. DHYANA – Meditatation
  8. SAMADHI – Bliss or Enlightenment.

Classical Division

  1. Jnana Yoga or Gyana Yoga - Union through realization. Knowledge ,wisdom, introspection and contemplation.
  2. Bhakti Yoga - Yoga of Devotion - The self transcending Power of Love. Path of love, devotion, emotion, compassion, service to god and others. All action done as the act of remembering god.
  3. Karma Yoga - Yoga of Action - Freedom through self-less action, Self less service to others.
  4. Raja Yoga - Royal Yoga or a comprehensive framework that emphasizes meditation, encompases whole of yoga
